Interview with The Shala

Founded in 1997, the aim of The Shala is to bring not just yoga, but a range of disciplines to those seeking exercise, community and relaxation in South London and beyond. The founder himself, Gingi, has been teaching yoga for over 25 years and has played a significant role in popularising ashtanga yoga here in the UK. He has agreed to answer some questions about his business, what it’s like to run it in the local area, and what 2025 has in store.

Where are you based?

We’re based in the heart of West Norwood, South London, in a beautifully restored Victorian building. It’s a peaceful sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle, perfect for unwinding and reconnecting. We love being part of this vibrant and diverse community.

What kinds of yoga do you specialise in?

We offer a wide range of yoga styles, including Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Yin, Restorative, and Pre/Postnatal yoga. Our focus is on mindful, breath-led movement, and we cater to all levels—from absolute beginners to seasoned practitioners. We also have meditation and breathwork sessions to complement your practice.

Why is yoga an important discipline, and what does it bring to a community?

Yoga isn’t just about movement—it’s about balance, both physically and mentally. It gives people a space to pause, breathe, and reset, which is so needed in today’s fast-paced world. In a community, yoga fosters connection, well-being, and a sense of belonging, helping people feel more present and at ease in their daily lives.

What’s the most important part of running a local business?

For us, it’s about creating a welcoming space where people feel comfortable and supported. Building genuine relationships with our students and being part of the local community is at the heart of what we do. It’s also about adapting to what people need—whether that’s offering more beginner-friendly classes or adding wellness workshops.

What qualifications do you and your fellow teachers have?

All our teachers are highly trained and certified, with qualifications ranging from 200-hour and 500-hour Yoga Alliance accreditations to specialist training in areas like prenatal yoga, trauma-informed yoga, and breathwork. Many of our teachers also have years of experience and continue to deepen their knowledge through ongoing study and practice.

What is your favourite part about running your business?

Seeing the transformation in our students—whether it’s improved flexibility, a calmer mind, or simply the joy of movement. We love the sense of community that has grown around The Shala, where people come not just for yoga but for connection and support. Watching people leave class feeling lighter and more at peace is incredibly rewarding.

What other opportunities do you offer to your students besides classes?

Beyond our regular classes, we offer workshops, teacher training, and wellness events. We’re also hosting a weekend yoga retreat in Ashdown Forest this June, which is a wonderful opportunity to deepen your practice in a peaceful, nature-filled setting. It’s a chance to step away from daily life, reset, and recharge.

How do you see your business evolving in the future?

We’d love to continue expanding our offerings—more workshops, more community events, and potentially even more retreats. We’re also exploring ways to make yoga even more accessible, whether through online content, outreach programs, or collaborations with local organisations. At the core, though, our goal remains the same: to provide a space where people can move, breathe, and feel at home.
